When it comes to coffee shops in North Park, there’s no shortage of cute spots nestled amongst the boutiques, bars, and restaurants.
If you’re looking for a new place to get your morning cup of joe, check out this list of North Park coffee shops.
From lavender lattes, to house made rose hips syrup, we’re certain you’ll find something that encourages you to get out and explore this bustling San Diego coffee scene.
Communal Coffee
Looking for a side of fresh flowers with your shot of espresso? Communal Coffee is a whimsical, cozy spot with an in-store boutique florist. It’s the perfectly charming space to bring a good book or a sketch pad and spend afternoon sipping a lavender, rose vanilla, or honey latte. If you’re in the mood to grab a bite, they serve plenty of breakfast pastries (like double chocolate donuts and banana blackberry muffins) and a range of lunch items and creative toast offerings. Chances are, you haven’t lived if you’ve yet to try their Cinnamon Crunch Toast with cinnamon, sugar, butter and vanilla. They also have an incredible selection of non-coffee beverages, too, like matcha lattes and seasonal lemon ginger kefir soda. Oh, and before you head out, make sure to grab a bouquet of beautiful flowers for the road!
Holsem Coffee
Holsem Coffee is one of the best coffee shops in North Park, in part because of their commitment to house-roasted fair-trade coffee drinks. It’s located in the heart of North Park, where it boasts a modern and sleek design and offers a selection of 7 roasts daily — Holsem Blend, Espresso, Peru, Sidamo, Yirgecheffe, Kenya, and Decaf. Holsem is known for their “coffee parlour cocktails” where the coffee is served shaken like a cocktail (just without the alcohol). Try the La Vie en Rose, which infuses a cappuccino with rosewater, rose petal, honey, and cardamom. You can also try unique offerings like a lemon meringue or Nutella Cold Brew, made with a blend of dark roast cold brew and homemade hazelnut milk. Don’t forget a bite to eat, like the Heirloom Tomato, Goat Cheese, and Zaatar Toast served with organic Prager Brother’s Bread — a family run bakery from Carlsbad.
Hawthorn Coffee
Step into the open and airy interior of Hawthorn Coffee, a coffee bar that’s all about creating community over a shared cup of really good joe. They offer seasonal drinks like the Rosebud Latte, made with a house made syrup of rose hips, juniper berries, lemongrass, and vanilla. Similar to their fellow North Park coffee shops, Hawthorn specializes in making an excellent slice of toast, like Fig Toast made with mascarpone cheese, crushed pistachios, fresh figs, and drizzled honey. Coronado’s Gluten Free Pantry even supplies this coffee spot with fantastic gluten free breads (from San Diego of course) so you can use a gluten free base for any toast. We suggest the “not a bagel” toast, too, which they call an ode to bagels everywhere and create using cream cheese, cucumbers drenched in Ponzu, pickled onions, and everything bagel seasoning with fresh dill over the top. If you find yourself in North Park on the hunt for a cute coffee shop, Hawthorn Coffee is the perfect place to try in the morning and the afternoon — or both!
Subterranean Coffee Boutique
Subterranean Coffee Boutique is a great spot to settle into table with your laptop and stay a while. They offer a wide variety of coffee and espresso drinks, tea, brunch, lunch — anything your heart desires. They have everything from an ultimate Waffle Breakfast with homemade Belgium waffle, 3 steamed scrambled eggs, tomato, and cheddar, to the 4 Layer Bagel with pesto, tomato, red onion, and layered cream cheese. You can get sandwiches, salads, smoothies, blended drinks like Mexican Mocha and the Frozen Monkey, or iced coolers than incorporate tea and home-brewed lemonade. The list of coffee beverages is extensive, too, and features both a classics section and a sweet section. Whether you’re looking for a Reese’s Mocha, a Princess Latte, or a simple americano — they’ve got you covered!
Caffè Calabria
Caffè Calabria is the longest serving specialty cafe and roaster in North Park. And if you’re looking for your San Diego coffee date with a slice of pizza, this is the place to be. They select the best coffee beans from around the globe to ensure that every sip is a true treat. As they say, the caffè is the door to their heart and the atmosphere is one of welcoming warmth and smells of award-winning espresso. They have pastries delivered from San Diego’s own Bread and Cie, and they also offer paninis for lunchtime. The best part? They have a pizzeria on site, too, which upholds traditional Neapolitan methods of the fresher ingredients and a thin crust baked in a custom wood-fired oven. The San Marzano tomatoes offer a powerful punch of flavor — as do the drinks from the bar. Wednesday through Sunday, the Italian neighborhood bar comes to life with not just pizza and espresso, but cocktails, wine, and locally crafted San Diego beer, too.
Young Hickory
Young Hickory is a hip hangout that serves as the perfect casual meeting spot for co-working, chatting, and catching up with a friend or two on your day off. They serve San Diego’s Bird Rock Coffee, cans of craft beer, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They make a sensational cheese panini on sourdough like The Inside Out with cheddar on the outside and inside, provolone, and muenster, and The Snob, with goat cheese, pear, fig preserves, and almonds. For salads, they have three different wedges depending on what you’re in the mood for. After you’ve sufficiently caffeinated yourself, choose from a can of craft beer (no bottles, no glasses — just cans) of which they serve an assortment of 30 different types. Whether you come to study, work, or simply to hang out — Young Hickory offers a little something for everyone’s own tastes.
